The European Association of Neurosurgical Societies

The European Journal of Neurosurgery: Acta Neurochirurgica

Access: Acta Neurochirurgica Online for EANS Individual Members

Aim & Scope

The journal "Acta Neurochirurgica" publishes only original papers useful both to research and clinical work. Papers should deal with clinical neurosurgery - diagnosis and diagnostic techniques, operative surgery and results, postoperative treatment - or with research work in neuroscience if the underlying questions or the results are of neurosurgical interest. Reports on congresses are given in brief accounts. As official organ of the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies the journal publishes all announcements of the E.A.N.S. and reports on the activities of its member societies. Only contributions written in English will be accepted.

The journal is abstracted/indexed in: Current contents, SCI, ASCA, Index Medicus, ISI/ BIOMED, Biosis, ADONIS, Excerpta Medica/Electronic Publishing Division.

Previous Issues

Summary of contents of previous issues are electronically available from 1995 and onward. Many articles are also available in abstract form.

Instructions to Authors

Manuscripts are to be sent to:

Email: acta_neuro@di-ep.com

To avoid delay authors are urgently requested to prepare their manuscripts according to these instructions. Submit the manuscript and illustrations in triplicate. Retain a copy for your own use. The manuscript must be type-written, with double spacing, on one side of the page only. Acta Neurochirurgica principally uses the English spelling and not the American one. That means for instance tumour with ou, haemorrhage with ae and so on. The American spelling is only accepted for manuscripts which are written by North American authors. Clear subdivision of the paper is an important help to the reader.

Unless the work requires another format each paper should consist of: summary, introduction, methods and material, results, discussion, references.

The summary should give a very short survey of the main contents. Its length may range between a half and a full type-written page. Add not more than four keywords at its end.

The introduction deals mainly with the underlying questions in the paper. After reading the introduction the reader should be able to understand why the work has been done, and what the intentions of the authors are. Methods and material must give short but precise descriptions, for instance how the experiments have been done, what apparatus and other technical aids have been used, the size of the clinical material and its subdivisions, the kinds and numbers of experiments, etc. This sub-chapter should enable the reader to control, repeat, or continue the scientific work of the authors. If the methods have already been described sufficiently elsewhere, it is advisable only to give an extremely short description and refer to the publication in which the full description of the method can be found.

Results should be reported precisely and concisely. Tables and graphs are welcome if they shorten the text and enrich its contents.

In the discussion the main results should be compared with those in the literature. Their relevance to practical neurosurgical work should be outlined.

References must be listed alphabetically. They should be numbered and identified by numbers in the text. A reference to a journal must include the surname(s) and initials of the author(s), year of publication in parenthesis, full title of the paper, name of journal (abbreviated according to "Index Medicus"), volume number, first and last page numbers.

Example:

Pia HW (1978) Classification of aneurysms. Acta Neurochirurgica (Wien) 40: 5-31

A reference to a book must include surname(s) and initials of author(s), year of publication in parenthesis, complete title of the book, edition, publisher, place of publication, first and last page numbers.

Example:

Symon L (1977) Olfactory groove and suprasellar meningiomas. In: Krayenbuehl H et al (eds) Advances and technical standards in neurosurgery, Vol 4. Springer, Wien New York, pp 67-91

Figures should be in black and white. They may either match the width of the column (8 cm) or the width of the entire page (17 cm). Illustrations not conforming to this width should be reducible accordingly. Please note that submitted illustrations cannot be enlarged. Colour photographs will be accepted, if they are necessary for the understanding of the text, but their publication will be at the author`s expense. The cost will be quoted by the publisher. Cards and graphs must be professional in appearance, and clearly legible when reduced in size for publication. Photographs should be glossy prints, sharply focussed and showing strong contrast. Positive glossy prints of X-rays are requested. Areas considered of special interest may be indicated on a transparent cover so that they may receive special attention. Cutouts or dispensable marginal areas may also be given.

The author must guarantee that the reproduction of illustrations in which a patient is recognizable is either approved by the patient him/herself or his/her legal representative.

Brief Reports of Special Cases. Only manuscripts with a maximum of 500 words, one illustration or one table and up to five references will be accepted.

Please add at the end of the paper the names, titles, and full addresses of all authors, and indicate to whom the galley proofs and requests for reprints should be sent. Springer will supply the corresponding author with one free copy of the relevant issue. Orders for additional offprints against payment should be given when returning the corrected proofs. Order form and price list willbe sent with the proofs. Authors receive galley proofs only, to shorten production no page proofs will be sent to the authors. Therefore corrections should be made very carefully. They should be kept at a minimum. All costs of corrections and alterations-other than those resulting from printer's errors-exceeding 10 per cent of the costs of typesetting will be charged to the author. All business communications, and in particular all correspondence concerning offprints should be sent directly to:
