Torstein Meling, President of the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies (EANS), and Jacques Morcos, President of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS), discuss the successful collaboration between the two societies especially
through the EANS-AANS Resident Exchange Program 2025. Through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), the program provides complimentary registration for neurosurgical residents selected by either association to attend courses organised by the partner
    society.

Additionally, Jacques extends a special invitation to European neurosurgeons to attend the AANS Annual Meeting – AANS Congress 2025, taking place from 25-28 April 2025, in Boston. The theme of the event, "Power of One – Impact
of Many," underscores the significance of global collaboration in neurosurgery.

Jacques also encourages neurosurgeons from AANS to attend the EANS 2025 Meeting in Vienna. The conversation explores the mutual benefits of learning from
colleagues on different continents, with both leaders acknowledging the enormous value of sharing diverse perspectives and practices.

Leadership has always been a fundamental part of who I am, starting from my early years. Growing up in a business-oriented family, I learned the importance of planning my steps carefully, paving the way for other women in my family as well.

One of the biggest challenges I faced was balancing a sound professinal and family life. The most rewarding aspect for me is when the EANS community makes me feel truly part of the family and values my contributions.

My message to young women aspiring to step into leadership roles is this: Set clear goals, prepare thoroughly, and create the space you need to thrive.

Remember, excellence knows no gender!

Celebrating EANS Women in Neurosurgery: Yu Mi Ryang, EANS Diversity in Neurosurgery Committee Chai

I would say my journey in neurosurgery is a never-ending one, which I mean in a very positive sense. New challenges constantly arise that need to be mastered. But this makes this job so rewarding and more importantly: it never gets boring. I have had, and still face, innumerous challenges on a daily basis.

One big challenge was to make a name for myself especially in very male dominated societies and in my speciality of spine surgery. In the beginning it was very hard to earn the respect and recognition of colleagues as well as course participants. With stamina, a strong will and very hard work I managed to stand where I am today holding prominent positions in various national and international societies (AOSPINE, DGNC, DWG, EANS, EUROSPINE).

Another enormous ongoing challenge is being head of a department, especially building and leading a team. To build a strong and motivated team took me several years and it is still work in progress. One key to success was to bring more diversity into my team thus creating an inclusive welcoming environment. Right now, I have a gender-equal team coming from 8 different ethnic backgrounds. As chair of the EANS Diversity in Neurosurgery Committee I am therefore strongly committed to improve gender equity and diversity in neurosurgery.

So far, I have been fortunate enough to have experienced many rewarding moments as a neurosurgeon, but also as a person. I feel rewarded every time I am helping a patient with my surgical handicraft, academically I was rewarded by becoming professor and being chair & faculty in many training courses around the globe, esp. the EANS Training Courses (TCs). As a head of department, I am rewarded every time I feel the team spirit and collegiality within my team. But luck is not a stroke of fate: “Diligence is the mother of good luck.” (Benjamin Franklin).

My advice for aspiring neurosurgeons is: never give up your dream! With the right mind set, the right plan and hard work you can achieve almost anything. Look out for mentors, try to build a network. Your heart needs to be fully committed to this wonderful specialty.

If you don´t burn for it, neurosurgery is not for you!

Celebrating EANS Women in Neurosurgery: Marisa Gandia, EANS Individual Membership Committee Chair

Throughout my journey in neurosurgery, I have faced significant challenges, including breaking gender stereotypes and confronting unequal opportunities. Sometimes, I have had to handle discrimination, as some colleagues might question a female neurosurgeon’s authority. I quickly learned that earning my reputation required not only hard work but often double the effort and sacrifice compared to my male colleagues. It was a constant reminder that, as a woman in this field, I had to prove myself more than once to gain the respect I deserved.

Despite the challenges, my career in neurosurgery has been incredibly rewarding. I have had the opportunity to pioneer change, acting as a role model for young female neurosurgeons and supporting them. Additionally, achieving a work-family life balance has been an essential part of my journey, proving that it is possible to excel in both my professional and personal life.

To the next generation of women aspiring to pursue a career in neurosurgery, my message is simple: overcome the barriers. Neurosurgery is not defined by gender; it is defined by skill, passion, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. Push forward, stand firm in your abilities, advocate for yourself and others, and never let anyone limit your potential. Seek mentors and strive to become one yourself. Lift others as you rise, because the success of one is the success of many. Your patients need your expertise, and the world needs your contribution. Never forget that you have the power to make a difference.
