EANS Individual Membership Committee Chair
I am 52 years old, married to Anja, and we have 3 boys (13-22 yrs). Just after leaving Cologne medical school in 1993, I became member of the Bonn neurosurgical team lead by Prof. J. Schramm. I was fascinated by his power, clarity and honesty, and dedication towards education of young neurosurgeons. I underwent scientifically based neurosurgical training, and I had the privilege to learn and to contribute especially to the epilepsy surgery program until I left in 2010, when I was elected chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at RWTH Aachen University. I have appreciated individual EANS membership since 2003. Since 2017 I am our national representative for the EANS training committee. I regularly enjoy EANS activities, e.g. as a pupil in “Train the Trainers course” or as teacher in the EANS Training courses. Adequate coaching of neurosurgical trainees is one of my most important missions, in the EANS as well as at home… At RWTH Aachen University, I mainly (50:50) do spine and cranial surgery (tumour, skull base, epilepsy, vascular). For some years I have been chair of the neurooncological centre at RWTH Aachen University, and I am of the directors of the newly established Aachen comprehensive spine centre. Our scientific groups cover translational neurovascular research including multimodal invasive monitoring in SAH and trauma patients, corresponding neurovascular lab research, different approaches to analyze mechanisms of cervical myelopathy, technical aspects of open connectivity in clinic and OR, and network alterations in epilepsy, tumour, and movement disorders.
